Must-Learn Travel Phrases for Your ESL Students (Part 2)

Traveling the world is one of the top reasons people want to learn English, and for good reason! English is widely considered the universal language of travel, with signs translated and service workers in popular tourist areas often able to assist in English.

In last week’s article, we covered phrases from leaving home to arriving at your destination. If you missed it, catch up here! This week, we’re introducing more practical phrases you can teach your online ESL students to equip them for a seamless travel experience.

Part 2: Accommodations, Dining & Shopping

Once your students arrive at their destination, the next challenge is interacting confidently in everyday situations, like checking into a hotel, ordering food, and making purchases. These are moments where English is absolutely essential.

1) At the Hotel

  • Spanish: Tengo una reserva.
  • Portuguese: Eu tenho uma reserva.

Can I check in?

  • Spanish: ¿Puedo registrarme?
  • Portuguese: Posso fazer o check-in?

What time is check-out?

  • Spanish: ¿A qué hora es el check-out?
  • Portuguese: A que horas é o check-out?

Is breakfast included?

  • Spanish: ¿El desayuno está incluido?
  • Portuguese: O café da manhã está incluído?

Do you have Wi-Fi?

  • Spanish: ¿Tienen Wi-Fi?
  • Portuguese: Vocês têm Wi-Fi?

What is the Wi-Fi password?

  • Spanish: ¿Cuál es la contraseña del Wi-Fi?
  • Portuguese: Qual é a senha do Wi-Fi?

The air conditioner isn’t working.

  • Spanish: El aire acondicionado no funciona.
  • Portuguese: O ar-condicionado não está funcionando.

2) At a Restaurant

  • Spanish: ¿Tiene esto en otra talla?
  • Portuguese: Você tem isso em outro tamanho?

Can I try this on?

  • Spanish: ¿Puedo probármelo?
  • Portuguese: Posso experimentar?

Do you have a cheaper option?

  • Spanish: ¿Tiene una opción más barata?
  • Portuguese: Você tem uma opção mais barata?

  • Spanish: Me lo llevo.
  • Portuguese: Vou levar.

Can I pay by card?

  • Spanish: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?
  • Portuguese: Posso pagar com cartão?

  • Spanish: ¿Me da un recibo?
